Useful Resources for following on after an Alpha type course
After Alpha by Michael Green (Kingsway)
Written specifically to meet the needs of those who have completed an
Alpha course, this is a good book to give to those who 'graduate'
from a course - or use it a chapter at a time as group discussion (participants
having read the chapter during the previous week).
A Life Worth Living by Nicky Gumbel (Kingsway)
8 chapters based on the book of Philippians. The chapters provide useful
discussion starters. Also available as a video format.
Challenging Lifestyle by Nicky Gumbel (Kingsway)
Based on the Sermon on the mount, the chapters deal with lifestyle issues.
each chapter would provide a useful discussion starter.
Discovering my Spiritual Gifts (various studies are available)
Recommended are 'SHAPE' from Saddleback Community Church (Rick Warren)
and available on the internet (www.saddleback.com)
and 'Network' from Willow Creek resources. Each has teaching notes and
individual and group excercises to help people discover their spiritual
gifts.
Emmaus by various authors (Bible Society)
All materials can be photocopied once purchased to provide handouts for
group members. The combined materials provide group work on a variety
of doctrine and lifestyle issues.
Just Growing by John Allen (Bible Society)
A 6 session course designed for new Christians with a focus on doctrine
and lifestyle.
Lifebuilder Bible Studies by various authors (Scripture Union)
A range of booklets for group bible study/ discussion. Particularly good
ones are Sermon on the Mount by John Stott, Psalms by Eugene Peterson
and Christian Disciplines by Andrea Sterk and Peter Scazzero.
Searching Issues by Nicky Gumbel (Kingsway)
7 chapters looking at issues such as suffering, sex, other religions.
The chapters provide useful discussion starters.
Walking with God Series by Don Cousins and Judson Poling (Zondervan)
Developed by Willow Creek Church, these are well worth looking at. The
first study (consisting of 13 sessions) 'friendship with god' covers much
of the Alpha material again but in a more detailed way. Later studies
cover most areas of Christian lifestyle, disciplines and doctrine.
